4、ia in Crisis management (COSMIC). While limited, the findings are based on desk‐based research and a stakeholder workshop. The authors find there are a number of inherent privacy‐related challenges to be considered, if t
5、hose involved in crisis management activities are to optimally use social media. They analyse some applicable challenges such as surveillance, (unrestricted) collection and processing of personal and sensitive personal i
6、nformation, and key European legal provisions that apply, including the General Data Protection Regulation. In conclusion, the authors argue that if not appropriately addressed, these challenges may result not only in ha

9、his article is based on research conducted for the EU‐funded COSMIC (Contribution of Social Media in Crisis management) project that ended in March 2015. For COSMIC, engaging with discussions concerning the ethical and p
10、rivacy considerations of the use of social media in crisis management was essential in ensuring the project promoted transparent and ethical practices in (future) crisis management activities. Within the project, the foc
11、us on privacy and ethical considerations employed desk‐based research and a validation workshop to identify privacy challenges related to the use of social media in crisis management.During the desk‐based research, the a
12、uthors analysed content relating to social media and privacy from peer‐reviewed journal articles, reports, event reports and relevant legislation. The selection of articles was based on a systematic online search using (
13、related) keywords in the period May 2013 to October 2014. Keywords included the following: ‘privacy issues and social media’, ‘privacy social media challenges’, ‘privacy, social media and disasters’, ‘social media and le
14、gal challenges in disasters’, ‘social media, privacy harms’ and ‘legal guidance social media’. The articles’ abstract and/or executive summary was examined for relevance – any articles that were deemed irrelevant were re
15、moved from the review. Lastly, articles were analysed and subsequent material was identified to be included in the review. The material was used to complete a report detailing the various issues identified in the review
16、relating to privacy and the use of social media in crises. The report was internally reviewed by other project consortium members. In addition, the preliminary findings were discussed with emergency managers and other re
17、searchers in the field of crisis management during a validation workshop which was held in Gothenburg, Sweden, on 21 May 2014. The workshop included several presentations on COSMIC findings, including a short presentatio
18、n on privacy and ethical implications highlighted in the report, followed by a questions and answers session – allowing for discussion. The workshop had 32 participants recruited via the project website, social media and
