4、o connect students in disparate countries as well as an increase in student comfort with technology. This paper highlights some of the unplanned and unanticipated consequences that might be encountered as the use of the

5、Internet in education increases. These consequences are discussed as potential problems, categorised as problems of judgement, distance, and ethics. Implications for educators and administrators are addressed by suggesti

6、ng course design, pedagogical, and student activity solutions.The Internet seems to be a virtually perfect instrument of education that offers the utmost convenience to students while offering endless possibilities for i

7、nnovative teaching (Applebome, 1999). The Internet reaches non-traditional students, provides interaction with industry experts (Siegel, 1996), and seems to provide the panacea of a self-paced, convenient learning enviro

8、nment. Yet, as noted by Suter and Kopp (1998, problem of ethics, since the Internet can blur the line between ethical and unethical actions. The paper concludes with a discussion of strategies that educators and administ

9、rators can use regarding course design, course delivery, and suggested student activities.The problem of judgementOne purpose of management education is to teach students to make sound business decisions. Part of teachin

10、g students to make better decisions involves improving their judgement, which refers to the cognitive elements of the decision-making process (Bazerman, 1994). An important aspect of this cognitive process is to determin

11、e which information to use in arriving at a decision. In the days before the Internet, managers received information only from a limited number of sources. Information came from their suppliers or customers, from within

12、the organization, from services that a business might subscribe to, or from some public source like the government or trade publications.With the Internet, the number of information sources that are easily accessible has

13、 dramatically increased, almost all having a purchase price of zero. Managers, as well as students being trained to be future managers, have begun to use the Internet to find information on almost every subject. But the

14、Internet has a huge, often contradictory or spurious, amount of information on several topics. This information may conflict with other reputable offline sources such as standard textbooks. For instance, the information

15、may be in the form of a theory, discredited in the offline world but presented on an impressive Web site in the online world. Or, consider sites that post data without checking its source due to staff limitations. While

16、the problems of legitimacy and accuracy have always been present, the speed at which a wider amount of information is available converts a minor nuisance into a major problem. In short, there is a problem of judging the

17、credibility of a Web site especially since appearance and immediacy can create the illusion of accuracy. Management professionals are especially vulnerable because their job involves extracting and utilising information

18、from the business environment. For example, decisions such as which supplier to do business with, may be made based largely on information obtained over the Web.Another potential danger in teaching courses primarily with
