2、eal the evolution of human ecological consciousness over the past hundred years. As an emerging literary critical approach, ecocriticism examines the relationship between literature and environment. It focuses on the exp

3、loration of the cultural root causes of ecological crises and the possible solutions to them through literary research. In the light of this theory, Cather and Proulx can be viewed as two spokespersons of their respectiv

4、e age, representing different ecological consciousnesses that occurred at the end of the 19th century and the 20th century. Apparently, people in Cather’s era worshiped and respected nature. In My Ántonia, she expre

5、sses her love and respect for nature by virtues of her affectionate and nostalgic description of the Nebraska prairie. Nature in her novel is a source of solace where her characters are free to roam. Proulx’s age, howeve

6、r, witnesses terrible ecological deterioration. In The Shipping News, she presents a horrifying panorama of the contaminated environment of modern society. She conveys her deep concerns over the ecological crisis modern

7、man has made himself into through this book. The comparative study of Cather and Proulx provides a glimpse of the evolution of man’s ecological consciousness over the last century, the most significant historical period

8、in terms of environmental changes. Now, at the beginning of a new millennium, confronted with the still rapidly deteriorating environment, mankind needs to be more conscious of the increasingly important role ecocriticis

9、m plays in human society. Reading literature through the eco-critical lens is expected to enhance public awareness of nature protection, so as to make people more prepared in dealing with ecological crises in the new era
