3、l development. The machining processes are carried out by machine tools, which may have manual, automatic or CNC operation. The automatic machines are suitable for the production of parts with complex geometry and/or whe

4、n it is necessary to produce parts on a large scale. In cases where there is a need to produce parts in large amounts, typically fully automatic CNC machines and processes are used, which increases the production capacit

5、y of the companies. These machines require equipment capable of feeding the raw material to the inside of the machine tools. For that, throughout this work is developed the mechanical design of a bar feeder machine for C

7、 systems, Machine upgrade.1. IntroductionMachining is a subtractive manufacturing process widely used to obtain mechanical parts with very good surface finishing [1]. It can assume different modes, depending on the geome

8、try to be generated, shape complexity of the final part and surface quality required [2]. A huge number of studies have been devoted to machining processes, since the optimization of machining parameters to the lifespan

9、investigation of uncoated and coated tools with diverse materials and cutting conditions [3-6]. Power consumption and other issues related to the sustainability have been also acutely investigated [7,8]. Moreover, the lu

10、bricants have been also deeply studied, regarding their harmful environmental behavior [9,10]. CNC (Computer Numerical Control) brought, in the last decades, a huge increase in flexibility and productivity to whole machi

11、ning processes, giving rise to a new metalworking generation [11].Recently, and taking advantage of the CNC machines and CAD/CAM software (Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing), many studies have been carri

12、ed out regarding trajectory optimization, trying to save time and improve the surfaces’ quality [12,13]. Nowadays, under the advent of Industry 4.0 principles, a deeper attention has been keen to the peripheral devices n

13、ecessary to improve productivity [14,15]. Effectively, productivity and quality are the requirements mostly demanded in this sector of activity [16,17], and they can be optimized following different ways, since the adequ

14、ate tool selection to the best set of parameters in order to work certain raw materials. Also, other conditions have to be taken into account, such as machine robustness and characteristics, in order to lead to the desir

15、ed quality results using the minimum cycle time.CNC lathes are usually used for revolution shape parts, which are typically produced in large scale. There are some studies about lathes and its functioning [18-20], but th

16、e main investigated issues are related to the clamping systems [18,19] and automatic cutting tool condition monitoring [20], among others, but the improvement of the productivity mainly linked to older CNC lathes 00 Refe

23、h the minimum screws to tighten and loosen;d. The setups of the feeder car positions will be made digitally by the man-machine interface;e. Calculations should be made just for critical structural parts and assemblies;f.

24、 Drive Motor deserves special attention because it has crucial importance in the equipment cycle-time.The driver motor is responsible to move the feeder car, by means of a chain drive, and it is responsible to develop th

25、e following actions (steps):1. Remove the rest of the bar from inside the CNC machine;2. Align the new bar to be attached to the bar guide rod;3. Feed the new bar into the CNC machine.The system performance time is very

26、important to the equipment cycle time because it is the system that develops the main movement regarding the process and presents the longest operation time within the cycle. In the first step, listed above, the feeder c

27、ar, coupled with the bar guide rod (Fig. 1), travels 3.2 meters; in the second step, the feeder car is not coupled with the bar guide rod, and travels 1.2 meters; and in the third step, the feeder car, coupled with the b

28、ar guide rod again, travels on average 2.3 meters, totaling a course of 6.7 meters per cycle.3. Results and discussionTo optimize the time performance of this system, and of the machine, while keeping the operating princ

29、iple, the achievable speed should be as high as possible but, this can be considered only for steps 1 and 2 listed above. Step 3 is more sensible (and, consequently limited) than 1 and 2, because it depends on the bar th

30、at is being fed (for small diameter bars, the velocity must be lower; for big diameter bars, the velocity may be faster). If the bar has a small diameter (between 3 mm and 12 mm), when the machine executes the step 3 wit

31、h high velocity, the bar may warp and cause damage to the machine. But, if the bar has a medium or a big diameter (between 12 mm and 28 mm), the bar may be driven with medium velocities (less than the velocities of the f
