2、hy and Freudian analytic criticism of the poet himself, and aesthetic, historical and cultural studies of Keats‘s odes. Eco-criticism is also on the rise, but researches are still mainly situated on the horizontal level.
3、 The connection between Keats‘s odes and the proceeding intellectual achievements has been out-proportionally ignored. More specifically speaking, the archetypes hidden in these odes did not receive their due attention.
4、 Like William Shakespeare, John Keats is endowed with a capacious universal spirit, blending the archetypes he inherited from both literary and philosophical predecessors into his six great odes – ―Ode to Psyche‖, ―Ode t
5、o a Nightingale‖, ―Ode on a Grecian Urn‖, ―Ode on Melancholy‖, ―Ode on Indolence‖ and ―To Autumn‖. This thesis attempts to provide a more systematic and detailed analysis of the two main archetypes manifested in Keats‘s
6、odes – the rebirth archetype and the Mandala archetype. Chapter One analyzes the rebirth archetype manifested in John Keats‘s odes. The poet first depicts the eternal paradox of transience and immortality faced by all hu
7、man beings, and then creates a precarious balance for this opposing pair through the frozen moment. This balance is further steadied by Keats‘s cycle of life, which is realized in the natural cycle of seasons, the period
8、ic internal structure of the odes, and his concept of the romanticized death. In this cycle, death no longer represents the ultimate end. It becomes another starting point for a fresh cycle of life and a new chance to so
9、ar up into the perfect realm which is symbolized as paradise. Although this cyclical view of life seems to resemble Biblical reincarnation and resurrection, it differs from the Bible in that it treats rebirth on the broa
