3、ant and respected postmodern writers of the contemporary America. As a productive writes, all his 14 novels and 8 short stories remain in print. Especially his masterpiece, Slaughterhouse-Five attracts great attention of

4、 researchers from various angles. But few of them involve studies from the aspect of historiographic metafiction. Based on the theory and concepts of historiographic metafiction, this thesis proposes the novel Slaughterh

5、ouse-Five as a typical historiographic metafiction, and also shows that it achieves the mergence of history and fiction since the relation of history and fiction ranks as the core issue of historiographic metafiction. In

6、 this thesis, after stating the paradoxical context of postmodernism and the theory of metafiction, analyzing Slaughterhouse-Five of Vonnegut in detail, the thesis finds that the novel possess some major characteristics

7、of historiographic metafiction including the unstable and de-centered subject, the problem of reference and the paradoxical relation of history and fiction. By using nonlinear narrative and science fiction genre, it cont

8、ributes to the mergence of history and fiction in this novel. In general, this thesis has an introduction, three chapters and a conclusion as following: The introduction introduces Kurt Vonnegut in the postmodernist cont

9、ext, makes the literature review of Slaughterhouse-Five and states the research aim, significance and methodology of the thesis. The second part states overall theory of historiographic metafiction which spring forth in
