3、Grass Is Singing has attracted increasing attention from readers and critics since its publication, making Lessing famous and popular all over the world. This novel tells the stories of a white woman's tragic life an

4、d the protest of the natives in southern Africa. Many scholars try to dig out the reasons for the protagonist’s tragic fate from such aspects as race, gender, love and society. This paper intends to explore the novel mor

5、e comprehensively from the narratological-stylistic perspective in order to understand the tragedy of the character and the protest of the natives, find out the relationship between the form and the theme and then find t

6、he aesthetic and artistic values. The thesis consists of seven parts. Chapter one summarizes Doris Lessing, the situation of current study on The Grass Is Singing at home and abroad, as well as the significance and the m

7、ethodology of the thesis, while chapter two is a panoramic view of narratological-stylistics. Four parts of narratological-stylistics are introduced. They are characterization, setting, spatial form and point of view. Ch

8、apter three explores two characters, Mary and Moses. It makes a detailed analysis of Mary’s voices and habitual action “cry” as well as Moses’ appearance and naming pattern. Mary’s voices change in her different life sta

9、ge. Moses’ great image, courageous look and his name indicate Lessing’s appreciation for Moses, and reflect the whites’ fear for the natives. Chapter four mainly focuses on the settings like the house, the farm and the b

10、ush and their influences on themes and characters. The structure and the construction materials of the house reflect the differences between the whites and the natives and the superiority of the whites over the natives.
