1、The present study attempts to probe into the effects of different lengths ofpre-task planning time on L2 learners' oral performance in a testing situation. Anexperiment was conducted on 95 Chinese college students who
2、were randomlyassigned to four groups and were asked to complete a battery of tasks under differentplanning conditions in which six different lengths of time were provided for planning,that is, 0 minute, 30 seconds, 1
3、minute, 2 minutes, 3 minutes and 5 minutes. 40subjects' oral data were selected for investigation. The major findings are as follows:1) the provision of planning time positively influenced the quantity of learners' ora
4、lperformance in the testing situation measured by production time, words and syllablesproduced within time limits; 2) the provision of planning time also positively affectedthe quality of learners' oral production, th
5、ough its effects on syntactic complexitywere fuzzy; 3) in three aspects of the linguistic quality of oral production, accuracyimproved the most significantly; 4) as for different lengths of planning time, theeffects o
6、f planning did not rise in line with the increase of time: too short time, say 30seconds, seemed to be inadequate for the improvement, while too long time, say 5minutes, began to cause diminishing effects of planning a
7、nd 2 minutes was tentativelyrecommended to be the optimum amount for pre-task planning; 5) bothhigh-proficiency and low-proficiency students benefited from pre-task planning but indifferent ways: the former improved t
