2、 of which in turn pilots pedagogicaltheories in practice. The present study explores the role of word fossil status inbilingual lexical representation and processing through a rating task, backward andforward word-transl
3、ation tasks and a word-recognition task implemented by40proficient Chinese-English bilinguals. Response times, error rates and omission scoresindicate that there is a significant difference between pre- and post-fossil w
4、ords interms of their processing. Word frequency effects are found on words of the two fossilstatuses. However, the effects are reversed: high-frequency words are responded tofaster than low-frequency words when both are
5、 pre-fossil words; in contrast, as forpost-fossil words, response times rise with the increase of frequencies. The findingsshow that word fossil status is a determinant in bilingual lexical representation andprocessing.
6、The present study slightly revises the current bilingual lexicalrepresentation and processing models and enriches L2 vocabulary teaching andlearning. Empirical research on the issue also tentatively tests the L2 lexicald
