4、)Globalizationitsdiscontentshasbroughtthisissuebacktothefefrontofpublicpolicyattention.WhileFDImaybringbenefitstotheeconomyinwhichtheylocateitisbynomeansclearwhethereveryonewillbenefittothesameextentindeedwhethersomewill

5、bebetteroffwhileotherswillsufferfromthis.ThispaperattemptstotacklethisissuebyprovidingacomprehensiveanalysisoftheeffectofFDIoninequalityinthereceivingcountry.Inequalityinthispaperisunderstoodaswageinequality.Inotherwdswe

6、attempttoinvestigatewhetherFDIbenefitseveryoneinthesamewayintermsofwages–hencebeingneutralwithrespecttoinequalitywhetherithelpstoalleviateactuallywsensinequalityineffectondomesticwageinequalitybyusingalargepanelofcountri

7、esfarecentperiod(1980–2002).OurempiricalapproachisinspiredbyatheeticalframewkduetoAghionHowitt(1998)wherewageinequalityisexaminedinamodelofageneralpurposetechnology(GPT).Thetheeticalconsiderationsleadustoexpectanonlinear

8、effectofFDIoninequalitywetestfthisexplicitlyinouranalysis.Asfarasweareawareourstudyisthefirsttodosoinacrosscountrycontextourresultsshowthatthenonlinearityisbneoutbythedata.Afurthernovelfeatureofourpaperisthatweexploitour

9、largecrosscountrydimensionbyallowingfdifferenteffectsofFDIoninequalityfindustrialised(OECD)developing(nonOECD)countries.Againdoingsobringstothefeimptantdifferencesbetweenthesetwocountrygroupings.Furthermewecontributetoth

10、eliteraturebybuildingourowndatabaseonwageinequalityindicesusingdatafromtheUNIDOIndustrialStatisticsdatabasewhichallowsustoincludealargenumberofcountriesoverafairlylongtimeperiod.Thesedataalsoallowuscapturetheoveralleffec

11、tofFDIbymeansofinequalityindicesbuiltonthewholedistributionofwagesinthemanufacturingsect.Sincethetheypredictschangesinbothwagelevelsthenumberofwkersinthetwogroupsourapproachseemsmepromisingincapturingthiscomplexpatternth
