2、s. The archetypal criticism of Northrop Frye is adopted as the theoretical basis of this thesis on the analysis of Moby Dick, among which the Theory of Myths and the Theory of Modes serve as the key approaches for the an

3、alysis. The textual analysis of this thesis is divided into two parts, namely the analysis of narrative framework and the study of characters. The first part is based on Frye's theory of myths. The cyclical movement

4、 of four seasons corresponds to the development of the plot; accordingly, the text is composed of five parts: the satire of winter, the comedy of spring, the romance of summer, the tragedy of autumn and the irony of wint

5、er. The cycle of four seasons, which is found in the novel, solidifies the base for the construction of this novel's literary canonicity from a macro perspective. The second part of text analysis, focusing on charact

6、er depiction, derives from Frye's theory of modes. Frye identifies five types of heroes in five fictional genres, differentiated by their powers of action, all of which can be found in Moby Dick. They are the god in

7、the myth (Moby Dick), the superior god-like human being in the romance (Captain Ahab), the leader in the high mimetic (Captain Ahab), the common character in the low mimetic (Ishmael), and the physically and/or intellect

8、ually inferior figure in the irony (Pip). Different characters encounter each other on the same stage of Moby Dick, and lead various genres to present main ideas, so as to promote Moby Dick's literary canonicity on a

9、 micro basis. The combination of the macro-study of plots and the micro-analysis of characters demonstrates the archetypal utilization of the novel, which builds up a bridge between author's creation and readers'

10、; reception, and further constructs the literary canonicity of the novel. This thesis is an attempt to prove the effects of archetypes in constructing the literary canonicity of Moby Dick. Key Words: Archetypal Critic
