7、anslated or defined.” He did however characterized it as “Abstract and intangible, it is yet the most delicate standard by which Chinese social intercourse is regulated.”,WESTERN FACE,Unlike “Western face”– which is more

8、 self-oriented and individualistic — Chinese face is more other-directed and relational. As a general sociological statement, Western cultures tend to focus on the individual as an independent, self-reliant being.,In

9、 raising children, the focus is on helping them develop a strong sense of personal integrity and individuality.,CHINESE FACE,In contrast, for some 4,000 years, Chinese culture has downplayed concept of the individual—ins

10、tead emphasizing the supremacy of the family and group.,It was all about bringing honor to your clan. With the emphasis on the collective, the sense of self blurred so much that it practically didn't exist. In fact,

11、individualism was seen as immoral.,Face,Having face,The concept of face can be loosely described as someone′s social status or reputation in the eye of others.,Throughout a Chinese person′s life it must be maintained a

12、nd enhanced through giving to and receiving from others in both words and actions.,Face,Losing face,In situations where someone of reputation has made a mistake or done wrong, and the error is made attributable to that

13、 person in public, then that one person has "lost face" - their reputation in the eyes of their peers has been reduced.,To make someone lose face or even unknowingly is a huge dishonor and could mean the end of

14、 a relationship.,TIPS FOR GIVING FACE:,Praising someone publicly (especially in front of their elders or boss).,Giving high marks on customer evaluation forms .,Giving sincere compliments and showing that you’re enj

15、oying oneself when being treated out.,Giving an expensive gift, especially an imported one.,Avoid these face-losing situation,Openly criticizing, challenging, disagreeing with, or denying someone.Calling someone out on
