4、induced improvements in skill. Methods: Thirty junior volleyball players (mean ± SD age, 15.5 ± 1.0 years) participated in this study. Subjects performed tests of spiking, setting, serving, and passing skills o

5、n 2 separate occasions to determine test–retest reliability of accuracy. Two expert coaches evaluated the players’ technique and reevaluated it 1 month after the initial evaluation to determine the intratester reliabilit

6、y for technique measurements.A third expert coach determined the intertester reliability for technique measurements. The validity of the test to discriminate players of different playing abilities was evaluated by testin

7、g junior national, state, and novice volleyball players. Finally, each player participated in an 8-week skill-based training program. Results: Accuracy measurements and intratester and intertester ratings of players’ tec

8、hnique proved to be highly reproducible (intraclass correlation coefficient, r, .85 to .98, range of typical error of measurement 0.2% to 10.0%). A progressive season have been documented.6,11-13 Studies of the effect of

9、 volleyball and physical conditioning training on the physiological and anthropometric characteristics of players are equivocal, with reports of increased,6,11,12 decreased,4 and unchanged fitness13 in response to traini

10、ng. Improvements in VO2max,6,11 speed,12 strength,6 and visual-reaction time6 have been reported after 5 to 10 weeks of volleyball and physical-conditioning training. However, recent evidence has demonstrated unchanged s

11、peed, agility, lower body muscle power, and VO2max over a season in junior elite volleyball players.Although volleyball players rely on well-developed physiological capacities, volleyball is also a game that requires hig

12、h levels of tactical and technical skill.However, studies of the technical skill and accuracy of volleyball tasks are limited, and most10,12 but not all14 studies employ general (and nonspecific) tests to evalate volleyb

13、all skill. Thissen-Milder and Mayhew10 reported significant differences among freshmen, junior varsity, and varsity players for general volleyball-playing ability, as estimated from the number of passing, spiking, and se

14、tting ball contacts performed in 1 minute. In addition, Franks and Moore12 reported a significant improvement in the number of hits during a 30-second wall-volley task after skill-based training in junior novice volleyba

15、ll players. However, although passing, setting, and spiking are important skills in volleyball, limited detail was provided on the nature of the tests in order to allow replication by other investigators. Furthermore, th

16、e number of ball contacts performed in nonspecific tasks provides no information on the technique and accuracy of volleyball-specific skills. Given the recent evidence that speed, agility, lower body muscle power, and VO

17、2max are unchanged over a season in junior elite volleyball players,12 the development of a standardized volleyball-specific skill-testing battery would provide objective evidence on the specific strengths and weaknesses

18、 of players to allow individualization of coaching programs, while also providing a useful tool to complement the physical fitness tests commonly used to monitor the development and progress of these athletes. With this
