4、 reasons for Howard Goldblatt’s creditable English translation of Red Sorghum’s success from the perspective of Reception Aesthetics. Nobel Prize in Literature 2012 was rewarded to Chinese writer Mo Yan, which indicates

5、that Western readers have accepted his works. Readers’ role, which is indispensable, has been long ignored in the appreciation of literary works. Translation is the most common way for Chinese works to reach Western read

6、ers and these target readers are a vital factor that influences translators. Reception Aesthetics attaches great importance to the function of readers and analyzes the reception course and effects of literary works. Whil

7、e works of Mo Yan possess unique style and qualities which cause their complexity, they have received considerable acceptance form Western readership. Therefore, the study focuses on the English version of Red Sorghum tr

8、anslated by Howard Goldblatt from the perspective of Reception Aesthetics in order to summarize effective measures and strategies that Howard Goldblatt adopted. After comparing and contrasting English and Chinese version

9、s of Red Sorghum, the author of the thesis summarizes and deduces distinctive features of the English version and the strategies that Howard Goldblatt uses. In his translation, Howard Goldblatt follows his belief in “tra

10、nslator’s primary obligation is to the readers” and considers readers’ horizon of expectations. By converting and explaining unfamiliar objects and concepts, deleting and rewriting certain difficult and unacceptable part

11、s and resolving inconsistency, he has met the expectations from target readers. He also modifies some spots of indeterminacy and blanks in the novel by rearranging or supplementing some plots and segmenting some paragrap
