1、This paper reports on a one-semester-long study of the teaching of English writing to Chinese non-English majors,using the lexical phrase approach.Based on theories and findings in SLA and paycholinguistics,the research
2、questions of this study were specified as the following: (1)Can the traditional product approach and the more recent approaches such as genre approach,process approach,and content-based approach be integrated into a new
3、model-the lexical phrase approach? (2)Is the lexical phrase approach effective in improving students'writing ability in the initial stage of English writing? The subjects involved in the study were 80 university sophomor
4、e students.They were divided into two groups:the control group and the experimental group.Berfore the study,they had a pre-test,which showed that they started from the same level in English writing.Then ,the author adopt
5、ed different approaches to teach them ,the traditional approach for the control group and the lexical phrase approach for the experimental group.At the end of the experiment,they were asked to write another composition.T
6、he writing tasks were undertaken independently in the class time and the compositions were rated using the same criteria.To further the study,a survey about the students'attitude towards English writing was conducted bef
7、ore and after the experiment.Data were collected and analyzed by statistical analysis software package SPSS 10.0.Results of the experiment revealed that the writing ability of the experimental group reached a higher leve
8、l than that of the control group over a period of one semester ,that is to say ,the lexical phrase approach showed greater effectiveness than the traditional approach in teaching English writing to non-English majors.By
9、acquiring a large repertoire of lexi8cal phrases,students could greatly improve their language accuracy,pragmatic awareness and skills in English writing.Results of the questionnaires showed that the lexical phrase appro
10、ach enjoyed total acceptance by the students..By adopting it in teaching writing,teachers could highly motivate the students and build up their confidence in English writing.In addition,the results of the questionnaires
11、indirectly proved that teachers could improve the students'fluency in writing by adopting the lexical phrase approach.However,due to the small sample size,the results obtained from this study will only serve as hypothese
