2、aker (1993). At the time it was envisaged that corpus linguistics would provide the methodology for carrying out empirical investigations while translation theory would identify the areas of enquiry and elaborate operati

3、onal hypotheses. Just as Mona Baker (2000:246) once pointed out that to decide certain translation choice of a translator is a kind of pattern rather than a single instance, it should be only through the observation of a

4、 large number of translation materials that are persuasive. Ever since Baker’s advocacy of using corpus to conduct translation studies, many other scholars such as Malmkjaer (1998), Sara Laviosa (2002), Ke Fei (2002), Ma

5、eve Olohan (2002; 2004), to name just a few, have also published theses and monographs about the significance and methodology of applying corpus, especially bilingual parallel corpus to translation studies. With the dev

6、elopment of Corpus Translation Studies, its remarkable advantage has been increasingly taken in terms of its descriptive nature and objectivity in quantitative research combined with qualitative analysis. Since the mater

7、ials concerned here are extracted from an authentic corpus, the detailed analysis with its results is more persuasive than the findings and conclusions obtained through certain empirical analysis and/or the interpretatio

8、ns by intuition. The present paper adopts a corpus-based approach to the tentative study on Liang Shiqiu’s and Zhu Shenghao’s translations of The Complete Works of Shakespeare from the perspective of functional equivalen

9、ce. The author attempts to adopt the English-Chinese Parallel Corpus of Shakespeare’s Plays (ECPCSP), from which all the instances of the English word “well” are extracted to assist the analysis in greater detail of the

10、research object—“well” as a discourse marker (DM). This chapter will briefly introduce the research background, the relevant research questions, the research methodology and the thesis structure. 1.1 Research Background

11、 Translation studies has boasted a time-honored history with bounty fruits achieved. Ever since the beginning of last century, and especially in the recent 50 M.A. Thesis Shanghai Jiao Tong University

12、 Dec., 2010 3 It should be noted that the studies on translations of Shakespearean plays before the emergence of CTS were largely prescriptive. These studies were conducted on the basis of a limited n

13、umber of plays, and the flaws and insufficiencies of studies of such nature are obvious. The study of the translations of Shakespeare’s plays, on the contrary, benefits a lot from the introduction of corpus, in this inst

14、ance, an English-Chinese parallel corpus, at least in the two chief respects as follows: (a) Authentic corpora: a large amount of corpora (data and instances) can be extracted from the corpus, readily available for curre

15、nt and future uses, catering to specific research subjects and objectives; (b) Objectivity: since the study is based and dependent on the corpora obtained from the genuine corpus, further data analysis, subject developme

16、nt, and case studies are mainly of quantitative nature. The research findings and reasonable explanations of what is behind the data are objective, suitable for further uses by others. Drawing on the benefits of CTS and

17、 set in the general context of pragmatics, here the present paper adopts the English-Chinese Parallel Corpus of Shakespeare’s Plays, and carries out a study of the translations of 23 plays by William Shakespeare, by two

18、translators, Liang Shiqiu, and Zhu Shenghao respectively, in particular, of the translations of the English discourse marker well in these plays, from the perspective of functional equivalence. 1.2 Research Questions In

19、 this paper, the main research questions to be answered are generalized as follows: ? How have the studies of Chinese translations of Shakespeare been conducted and what are the relevant findings? ? What are the crucia

20、l theories and findings in studying discourse markers, and in translating the DM well in particular? ? How do the two translators, Liang Shiqiu, Zhu Shenghao translate the DM well in Shakespeare’s plays? ? What are the
